Hello? Is this thing on?
[Riley can be heard fiddling with the device, a scratch here, a muffled thud there.]
Buffy, are you out there? Giles? Anyone?
[There’s a sigh and a moment of silence before Riley’s voice is heard again. This time he sounds much more confident.]
Alright, I don’t know what’s going on or who’s done this but I’ll find out soon enough. And if I find out it’s you guys… there’s gonna be hell to pay. Especially if you’ve hurt anyone.
[The device clicks as he shuts if off.]
Third Person Sample:
“Are you serious? You actually think I, your commanding officer, am going to go down there before you, soldier?” Riley Finn couldn’t help but smile at the younger man as he instructed him down into the sewer.
“But sir,” pleaded the younger man. “What if the HRT’s are waiting to ambush us down there?”
“Then we’ll cover you. You see we have these devices called rifles that fire out small chunks of metal that can damage things. Unless,” Riley rested his rifle on his shoulder and strode over to the soldier. “Are you saying you’d rather cover me?"
“Y-yes, sir.”
“Are you saying you don’t think I’m capable of covering you?”
“No sir I-“
“Are you saying you think you’re a better shot than me, soldier?”
“No sir,” said the soldier as his head fell in embarrassment.
“Didn’t think so. Now, get down there and tell us if it’s clear or not.”
“Yes sir.” With that the soldier checked his weapon and slowly made his way down through the manhole. It wasn’t long before a gunshots and nonhuman screams could be heard echoing up through the hole in the street. “Uh, sir? It’s… it’s not clear down here.”
Riley straightened up, cocked his rifle and turned to face the men behind him. “Alright, weapons at the ready everyone. This won’t going to be just your average walk through the sewer. I want you all to split off into groups of two once you’re down there. Back to back so nothing can surprise you. Understood?”
“Sir, yes sir,” came the reply from the dozen men and women under Riley’s command.
“Uh, sir,” said the nervous soldier still down below. Now multiple non-human sounds could be heard as if they were closing in on him. “I could use a little help down here.”
“Right,” said Riley as he walked over to the hole before addressing the rest of the group again. “And one more thing. Give me five minutes first.” And with that, Riley Finn dropped down into the sewer with a grin on his face.
Additional Third Person Sample:
The cold night air turned Riley Finn’s exhaled breath into mist as he walked through the darkened cemetery. His heavy footfalls dead giveaways to those with a trained or enhanced ear. All his training and all his experience screamed for him to move silently and swiftly but tonight he refused. Tonight he was the bait. Tonight his perceived ignorance would bring the vampires out from their stolen crypts, their fresh graves. Tonight they wouldn’t resist the hunt.
Riley wasn’t fast enough or strong enough to take the vampires on blow for blow, he knew that and so did they. What they didn’t know was that Riley almost reveled in that fact. Plunging your stake into what passed as a heart and feeling your enemy turn to dust and that sudden near weightlessness of the stake as its target ceased to exist, ridding the Earth of such a vile thing... it was intoxicating and it was the only thing that even came close to placating him. To know you could take down an enemy so much stronger than you. And take them down withease. In that moment he mattered. He meant something.
No, he thought to himself. Don’t go down that road. Focus on the here and now. He rolled his shoulders, fighting off a chill and kept walking. A single snap of a twig was the only thing that gave the vampire away when it rushed Riley and instead of reacting immediately he waited. Waited until the vamp was just a step away and at the last moment he stepped to the side and sent his elbow flying backward into the nose of the snarling monster.
The vampire, a small man in a suit, fell down onto the ground dazed and before he could react Riley was plunging the wooden stake into his heart. He struck the vampire with such force that he felt ribs snap before the entire thing turned into dust and faded away. The stake plunged further, into the ground, as Riley knelt there and breathed deeply. There it was. That feeling of exhilaration that followed every dusting and made his heart beat so fast it felt as if it would burst.
After just a few more breaths Riley stood, rolled his shoulders again and returned the stake to the inside of his leather coat. Once again the cold night air turned his breath into mist and with heavy footfalls continued to walk though the cemetery. Not the prey but the hunter.
character name: Riley Finn
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Timeline: 5x02, Real Me
character's age: Early 20's
powers, skills, pets and equipment:
Riley won't be coming in with any real special equipment. Just the typical clothes and the like... and a stake. Gotta have a wooden stake.
Canon Abilities:
As a member of the Initiative Riley was secretly given meds that increased his strength and to a lesser degree his speed. His enhanced abilities were by no means comparable to that of the Slayer or most demons he went up against but when paired with his special ops training he became not just an exceptional combatant but a lethal one.
On top of his physical attributes Riley is a fairly smart individual showing strong leadership skills. Skills that the Initiative took full advantage of by giving him a high rank. As a cover Riley also was a psych major in college. It’s never really made clear just how much of a cover this is but Riley does show interest in the field from time to time.
Riley also shows a proficiency in fire arms and minor medical skills.
Additional/In-Game Abilities:
I’d like to give Riley identical abilities to that of a marvel Super Solder, IE Captain America. He won’t arrive with these abilities but instead I’d like to treat his heart attack and deteriorating health as a way for them to manifest. He’ll get worse before he gets better.
As a Super Soldier Riley would be at the peak of human potential and possess enhanced strength, speed, stamina, durability, reflexes, agility and senses. His mind is also affected, making him a much more efficient thinker (not necessarily smarter).

canon history: Buffyverse Wiki: Riley Finn
personality:
On the surface Riley Finn seems like the stereotypical Good Ole Boy. He’s polite, considerate and caring while believing there’s a proper way to conduct yourself around others. He has a strong moral code and is a little quick to judge but willing to admit when he’s wrong and reevaluate his stance on things. However his characterization is much deeper than that. He’s a deceptively complex and believable character.
For quite a while all Riley really knew was his life with the Initiative, a special ops organization that dealt with demons. As strange as it sounds the Initiative made his life simple. He was told what he was supposed to do, how he was supposed to live and what was right and wrong. Simply put they filled all the roles Riley needed in his life. You see, as tough as Riley acts he doesn’t want to be alone. While he was with the Initiative he knew someone was always watching his back and it gave him a sense of purpose. It gave him something to hold onto and despite having girlfriends in the past it wasn’t until he developed feelings for Buffy Summers that his dedication to the Initiative was challenged.
At first Riley was kind of… okay, he was REALLY a dork around Buffy. Normally Riley’s a fairly calm individual but something about Buffy always seemed to bring his testosterone infected alpha male personality boiling to the surface. When it comes to Buffy he’s always a little overprotective but not so much in a controlling way. Riley’s much sweeter than that. He believes he has certain responsibilities and protecting the people he cares about is at the top of his list. It just so happens Buffy’s the most important person so she gets the brunt of his old-fashioned, overprotective boyfriendiness.
Buffy’s the most important thing in Riley’s world and he’s never really tried to hide that fact. Even after his ordeal with the Initiative the first person he went to was Buffy.
Unlike previous new additions to the Scoobies Riley gets along with everyone pretty well. This is made most obvious by the fact that Xander and Willow, Buffy’s closest friends, accept him into the group fairly easily with Willow even helping Riley score points with Buffy. Willow, what a bro.
Of course everything isn’t always smooth sailing. The way Riley approaches many situations tends to seem strange to the gang. He’s significantly more direct and tactical because of his background and that leads to a simple yet understandable view on things. Riley’s concern for Willow when he finds out her ex-boyfriend Oz is a werewolf clearly shows that.
Riley tends to see things in black and white. You’re either good or bad. Bad usually meaning demons. This isn’t entirely his fault though. It’s all he’s ever been told and prior to meeting Oz he had never really been given the opportunity to form his own opinion about the matter. It’s his experience with Oz that allows him to reassess his views on what constitutes good or bad and finally begin to think for himself.
Of course Oz isn’t the only factor in Riley’s enlightenment. Prior to helping him escape it was discovered that the Initiative, especially their leader Maggie Walsh, were secretly feeding their soldiers meds that increased their physical capabilities. Maggie’s death combined with the forced withdrawal from the lack of meds began to drive Riley insane. This point in time is fairly important when considering Riley’s characterization. It shows him without a filter, expressing just about everything that comes to mind. Not in the comedic sense like most developments in other media. Instead it showcases how paranoid he can get now that his world is imploding. He even goes as far as accusing Buffy of doing terrible things.
Of course Riley doesn’t stay like that forever. The matter appears to be resolved fairly quickly thanks to Buffy’s overwhelming support. Unfortunately a person doesn’t quite get over such an ordeal as easily as Riley appeared to and that shows later on when Riley was still doubting things. That’s Riley’s biggest flaw, he just thinks too damn much.
Thinking too much and… being a manly man lead to Riley doubting his worth to Buffy. Because of this he became reckless patrolling on his own and ignoring the fact he was obviously in poor health. Ever since suffering withdrawal from the meds he was fed by the Initiative Riley’s enhanced abilities had been fading… until his pain receptors began to shut down and his strength seemingly increased. Despite making him more than a match for most vampires it wreaked havoc on his body by increasing his heart rate exponentially. Of course his manpain had him keeping this little bit of information from everyone, especially Buffy. The pros outweighed the cons in his opinion. It not only gave him the means to better fight vampires but also brought him closer to Buffy’s level which he mistakenly thought was what really mattered to her.
To a lesser degree Riley blamed his feelings toward the Initiative for why he didn’t seek treatment but we all know… manpain is a serious thing and needs to be dealt with in a serious and manly manner :|.
After getting treatment and accepting the fact he wasn’t going to be as powerful as he used to be Riley began to feel as if he and Buffy were growing even further apart emotionally. At the time Buffy’s mother Joyce was going through some health problems of her own so Riley understood why it was happening but at the same time needed the opportunity to be more supportive. Buffy opening up to Riley in the way he wanted just wasn’t in the cards however and he began to seek intimacy in other forms.
Riley’s allowing vampires to bite him is another problem that came from his too-much-thinky-thing and mistrust of Buffy. The fact she let both Angel and Dracula bite her is something that always made him uncomfortable and a little curious as to why. The twisted intimacy gave him temporary relief from what he thought of as a lack of emotional intimacy with Buffy.
It was after Buffy discovered what Riley was doing that Riley was given the opportunity to rejoin the military and leave Sunnydale behind. He took the opportunity after Buffy refused to try and work their problems out and even though it was such an abrupt break it took Riley over a year to get over Buffy. Even then it was only with the help of his future wife.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
I feel Riley's well suited for the game because he's sort of an all-around character and can fit well into the vast majority of settings. His canon deals heavily with supernatural things and some mystery which I feel works well with the setting of the game.
... Also the Buffy cast is awesome and I need to get in on that.
